For two years – literally – I’ve been trying to get my mother to read Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. For two years, after managing it through about five chapters and giving up, she has refused. But now, finally, she’s reading it. Victory!

Why on earth am I so excited that I’ve forced her to read this book? Simply because the Uglies series is amazing. Have you read it? You should.

Here’s a brief synopsis for you sorry souls who’ve never heard of Scott Westerfeld before:

Tally Youngblood lives in our world, 300 years after a disaster wiped out most of humanity. When she hits sixteen, she’ll be given the Operation, making her beautiful and perfect and allowing her to party her days away. Until then, she’s a nobody – an ugly. Then she meets Shay, an ugly who isn’t sure she wants the Operation. When Shay runs away, Tally is forced to make a choice: find Shay and bring her back against her will, or stay ugly forever.

Sounds weird? Actually, it’s amazing. After reading it, you’ll be asking yourself all sorts of questions… that I can’t really describe without unleashing mega spoilers. But if you like sci-fi, or even if you don’t, read this book. You shouldn’t be disappointed.
